  • All returns accepted: ReturnsNotAccepted
  • Condition: Pretty nice condition. The photographic image is slight off center with the right margin wider than the left margin. There is very slight surface wear. There is also slight edge wear including a fold near the top margin that runs for about the left half of that margin. It is not very noticeable and is also far away from the image of the ship. The ink inscription of the back has left a very slightly noticeable as an impression on the front of the image. On the back, there are two yellow spots probably corresponding to where small amounts of tape were used to hold the photo in an album. There are areas of toning and slight soiling to the back as well. Please see photos. (The ruler in the photos is NOT part of the sale.) Sold as is.

    Description

Up for sale is a beautifully composed, vintage professionally taken photo of a ship, probably a cargo ship, at dock.  The reverse of the photo has the stamp of the photographer as well as an ink signature giving the date and (perhaps) the Captain's name.
The ship was the the M/S Alca and the photo was taken 4/4-58 (April 4, 1958).  The photographer's rubber stamp reads: "Dick Markel Photographer, P. O. Box 706, San Pedro, Calif. FRontier 53311".  I strongly suspect that the ship was docked in San Pedro Harbor.  There is also a name written in ink under the ship's name and date.  I believe this reads "Hans Foelsson" which may be the name of the captain.
This photo measures 10 inches wide by 8 inches tall and so would be very easy to place in a standard sized frame.  It is in black and white.  I think that the anchor hanging from the pier, in the foreground to the right of the ship, is a lovely touch.
Please see above for photos and description of condition.  Sold as is.
