    Description

NOTE:                    - - - Please see my many other 7Up UnCola billboards and posters for sale from the same era and award winning ad campaign. - - -
    59" x 35" 7Up UnCola original vintage paper poster
Title/Nickname:    "Don't Be Left Out In The Cola"  (aka: Quanset Hut, or Nessen Hut)
    Illustrator:
    Milton Glaser
(also created the "I [heart] NY" logo in 1977)
Rainlap Code #:     71xxx per the Rainlap Diagram on the back side of upper left panel A1 (unknown since no billboard copies have surfaced in modern times - see Image 11)
    Year:                      1971
    Size:                       58 5/8"  x 35 1/2" (= 148.91 x 90.17 cm) - 'Subway' Size B
    Copy Number:        2 of 2.
    This is
    ONE
    of only about
half of a dozen known copies
of this image in this size.  About an equal number of 34"x21" Size "C" versions also exist (two of which are also in my possession.
See one of my other listings for an equally rare Size "C" version.
    ).
This is the only copy of this image that I have for sale in this size at this time.  Finding any copies of this is difficult.  Finding one in this "near mint" condition is a rare opportunity to own a piece of advertising and graphics history.
    Poster Offers:
Three poster offers* (see Images #10 & #11) in my collection made these available in multiple sizes including 21'x10' Billboard Size "A", 59"x36" Subway Size "B", 34"x21"
    standard
    poster
Size "C" and 21"x11" locker Size "D".  The expiration dates of the 3 poster offers I have were 5/31/72, 9/1/72 & 6/30/74.  Prices ranged from .50 for the billboard down to {{detail_product_description}}.50.  In ten years of collecting I've never seen any copies of Sizes A or D surface.  I'm aware of probably no more than a dozen copies available in ANY size of this image.  The number of
potential surviving copies of this image is extremely small.
    - -  - UNBELIEVABLY RARE - - -
Printed Signature:    unsigned - Milton Glaser did not sign either of the 2 images he illustrated for The Seven Up Company at their invitation.
Condition:                Near Mint!  There are very small thumb tack holes in all 4 corner and the top & bottom center edges.  There's a 4 1/2" radial rip in the bottom right corner that has about 1" left at the bottom that's still intact (Image #5).  A small amount of acid-free scrapbooking tape has been added to secure the loose corner.  The colors are still very vibrant and are very comparable to my mint condition premier copy #1.  I've seen other copies elsewhere in far worse condition with the bright blue and brown colors very faded.
    This poster:
    Milton Glaser
    (6/26/29 -
    6/26/20
    )
    co-founded
the prestigious "Push Pin Studios" with Seymour Chwast
    and Edward Sorel.

Glaser's archivist has posted a photo online (link below) of the original artwork for this poster proving that he was indeed the artist for this unsigned illustration.  In addition, two independent booklets* from the early 1970's directly attribute this image and a companion "Like No Cola Can" image to him (images #7 & #9).

MG created the famous Bob Dylan album poster insert in 1967 (over 6 million copies) and the world famous "I [heart] NY" logo in 1977 (among many more).  The two 7Up UnCola billboard and poster images in my collection fall in between those 2 landmark illustrations during the
    Push Pin Studios
    era.
In 2015 Milton Glaser stated that “Trying to sell people a bottle of soda is as dangerous as giving them an armed weapon."  Well, he probably would have disowned his 7Up images today, but early in his career a commission was a commission and meant bread on his table.  He's signed most of his work done since this era but he's probably glad he didn't sign this illustration after all.
Image 1 is the front side of the poster.
Images 2-5 are closeups of the 4 corners - clockwise from the top left.
Image 6 is the back side.
Image 7 is a double page spread featuring Milton Glaser and his other 7Up UnCola billboard image in a 1971 or '72 American Contemporary Graphics booklet* featuring many of "The UnCola" artists.
    Image 8:
It was only natural that the creators of Mad Men turned to Milton Glaser when commissioning the commemorative poster for their final Season 7 (set in 1969) which aired in the spring of 2014.  Compare the colors and style from this 1971 poster with the 2014 Mad Men poster and you'll see the consistency in his style and color palate over the decades.
Image 9 is a double page spread from a
Simpson Lee Paper quarterly "Dimensions" booklet* which was dedicated entirely to "T
he UnCola" ad campaign.  It dates
    to
    about the Fall of 1973.
Pages 23-24 feature this "Don't Be Left Out In The Cola" image he produced for The Seven Up Co. paired with "The Light Shining Over The Dark" by Pat Dypold.
Image 10 shows a yellow 17" x 11" billboard and poster offer that expired on 9/1/72 making this image available to the general public as Design #9 in 4 sizes ranging from 21'x10' billboard Size "A" down to 21"x11" Size "D" (.50 - {{detail_product_description}}.50).
Image 11 is a "New for 1973!" billboard and poster offer that expired on 6/30/74 and made this image available as Image #9 in the smaller Sizes B, C & D.
Image 12:  Although this image was also offered to the public in billboard format, the only published sighting to date is recorded in a 1970's magazine photo of it installed as wallpaper.
    "The UnCola" story:
My listings come from the largest, one-of-a-kind collection of 7Up UnCola posters and billboards in the world.  To learn more about this award winning ad campaign, search for in-depth articles by Collectors Weekly (Collecting 7Ups Most Beautiful Hallucinatory Billboards), Dangerous Minds (The UnCola 7Up And The Most Psychedelic LSD Friendly Ad Campaign of All Time) or DJ Food's (7Up The UnCola Posters) blogs.  Alternately, search <7Up UnCola> on flickr dot com and you'll quickly find out more about these art competition winning advertising images issued in the late 60's & early 70's:
These outdoor ads (billboards) were commissioned by the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. of Chicago (JWT) between 1969 and the mid-1970's.  I consider them the "Midwest Mad Men".  Most of the 54+ extremely colorful billboard & poster images were illustrated by invited outside freelance artists who were allowed to sign their names on the originals if desired - not all did.  If their design was selected, they received ,000 for the final artwork.  My collection includes at least one each of over half of the billboards and only my duplicate copies are being offered for sale.  A few images were produced in-house at JWT, and never with the artist's name on them.  JWT wisely chose to invite only up and coming artists and not well known graphic stars so as not to let their notoriety overshadow the 7Up product itself.  FYI - Peter Max did NONE of the 7Up posters, contrary to popular belief.  This famous ad campaign increased sales by 30% in a short time and rescued Seven Up from near bankruptcy.  Since then they've lost their fizz.
Many of the artists have gone on to great fame in the graphics community Milton Glaser (I [heart] NY logo) (Mad Men final Season 7 poster; co-founder of Push Pin Studios), Seymour Chwast (co-founder of Push Pin Studios) with Isadore Seltzer (Push Pin), John Alcorn (Push Pin), Barry Zaid (Push Pin), Kim Whitesides, Jacqui Morgan, Simms Taback (1st Happy Meal Box in Smithsonian & Caldecott Honor for children's books), Skip Williamson (underground comics), Robert Abel (1st Tron movie animations), Charlie White III (permanent collection at MOMA), John Craig, Ray Lyle, Heather Cooper, Nancy Martell, Roger Chouinard, Pat Dypold, Bob Taylor, Tom Kamifuji (original rainbow logo for Apple), Bill Bosworth, Ed George, Joanne _ and probably several others.
From time to time Seven Up offered other billboard and poster images to the general public for prices ranging from {{detail_product_description}}.50 to .50 for posters and .50 up to .50 for billboards.  My collection also includes a number of billboard & poster offers that helps me to pin down issue dates.
