    Description

Please email with any questions. Antique 1881 bill of lading for merchandise sent from Philadelphia to Savannah, Georgia aboard a steamship of the Philadelphia & Southern Mail Steamship Company.
Formed in 1866 to re-establish routes from the city to Southern ports after the Civil War. Initially it purchased government surplus wooden vessels but later ordered iron ships. It was bankrupt by the 1880's due to competition from the Railroads. Printed in black on off-white newsprint weight paper, 8 1/2" by 11" with a list of all overland points reached via Savannah. Some faint creases and wrinkles, edges show some loss, faint soiling. Genuinely antique, this document came from a collection of ephemera from a Macon, Georgia hardware store closed for well over 100 years.
