C. 1959 States Marine Lines N.S. Savannah 1st Nuclear Powered Cargo Ship Ashtray

Item up for bid is a spectacular vintage advertising ashtray promoting the building of the ship that would be known as the N.S. Savannah which was the world's first nuclear powered cargo and passenger ship. Ship was built by States Marine Lines which has their logo at the top center of the ashtray. Bottom gives dates for when the keel was laid, launched and dates of expected completion. Ship was created as part of Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" initiative to showcase the potential of civilian and peaceful potential for nuclear energy. Ship was in service from 1962 to 1972 and remains as one of only 4 nuclear powered cargo ships ever built.
Item has marking on the bottom showing where this was made by Pearson Sales Company of New Orleans. Glazed porcelain shows no chips, cracks or breaks that we can see or feel. Upper edge is trimmed with gold tone paint which shows extensive paint wear from age and use. Item measures 6-6/8" x 6-6/8" x 0-7/8" in depth.
