    Description

The original brass lens cap for my 1935 Rolleiflex is in pretty good condition, but it’s loose enough that I worry about losing it. They’re quite rare, and expensive when you do find one. So I made my own copy out of rubber and decided to make some more for other users. They fit cameras like the one in the first photo, manufactured between 1932-38, with the metal retaining pin between the lenses. They won’t fit anything older or newer.
At a casual glance, it looks very much like the original cap. However, the originals were made out of thin sheet brass, so I had to make the top surface and side walls about twice as thick because they’re made of flexible polyurethane rubber. Because of this, I also had to make the “saddle” between the lenses thicker, although the cap installs and removes exactly like the originals — pushing and pulling on that center saddle. It holds quite firmly onto the retaining pin in the camera body.
The rubber is solid black. But because these cameras usually have considerable paint worn off, I decided to add some fake “brassing” to blend better with the camera. This is not paint that can wear off; it’s actually metal powder impregnated into the rubber during the molding process. Because the entire process is by hand, each one is different, and I can’t predict the final appearance exactly. That’s why I’ve included a picture of several. The cap at far left in both pictures is the original brass cap; you can see the average variation in the others.
The texture on the rubber bridge between the lenses was duplicated directly from the camera body.
Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out a way to duplicate the color of the lettering. As far as I can tell, it was originally done with a pantograph-controlled engraver, and that’s way beyond the capabilities of my home workshop. However, the logo designs are still very legible.
Because I made my molds from an original cap, my replicas also have the same small defects as the 85-year-old original. Most of them also have some small bubbles and marks on the back/inside, although not on the front, and these never affect the function of the piece. They are just minor artifacts from my hand-molding process.
The price is for ONE lens cap. Camera and original cap are NOT included, of course.
Note to buyers outside the USA:
I ship free to eBay's international shipping service in Kentucky. After leaving there, they will be subject to an additional international shipping charge. And in most cases the destination country will add an import (customs) charge. These vary from country to country. For instance, my trimmers sent to Japan have no import charges, but when sent to Great Britain and France the import charges are almost as much as the item itself. I apologize in advance for this, but it is entirely beyond my control.
