On August 1, 2020, the Oakland Athletics visited the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. It was not the home opener for the Mariners, but the day AFTER the home opener. (A ball boy must have accidentally given the umpire a ball that was left over from the day before.) Mike Fiers started for the A’s, while Yusei Kikuchi went for the Mariners.
Heading into the sixth inning, Kikuchi had shutout the A’s. Khris Davis led off with a single. Stephen Piscotty then walked to the plate. With the count 0-2, KIKUCHI HELD THIS BALL IN HIS HAND!! He threw a 96.3 mph!! four-seam fastball, and PISCOTTY LACED THIS BALL TO KYLE LEWIS IN CF FOR A SINGLE!! (Yes, that means this is one of the early balls Lewis handled in his AL ROY season and career!!) This ball was then retired. Kikuchi then struck out Sean Murphy and Marcus Semien. Matt Chapman ended the half inning by grounding out to Kyle Seager. The A’s went on to win the game 3-2.
