Very Old, Blue VOIT DIVE MASK 1960 - External Nose Clips! Wonderful Piece of Scuba History!
I have several VOIT Dive Masks from the 1960s to list in the next few days.
If you're hoping for a mint VOIT B4 Blue, sorry - NOT going to happen.
Mike Nelson from Sea Hunt would never forgive me if I sold mine!
But there are some old beauties for your vintage collection.
This one is Model B11B from the 1960 VOIT catalog.
It's one of the most interesting masks VOIT made and was quickly copied by other manufacturers.
It has an oval, almost egg-shaped, face plate when all other masks were round. This gave it a neat appearance and supposedly better vision.
The mask also has a very nice-looking mask band screw.
Where most other masks, before & after, used a simple nut & bolt to hold the band, this one has a beautifully rounded chrome assembly.
It actually is just a nut & bolt but so nicely crafted to look smooth & sleek that it stands out.
The most notable feature is the external nose pinchers. Nose pockets for reaching up & pinching the divers nose were common for equalizing.
But they were often hard to use, particularly for scuba divers. The regulator made their use difficult. Most divers found that it took 2 hands to pinch their nose.
The B11 from VOIT used an ingenious pair of metal wings to pinch the nose pocket. It could be done with 1 hand and in seconds.
Several other big name gear manufacturers copied this idea from VOIT as well.
This mask looks good. It needs to be cleaned up a bit but it would sure generate comments in your Vintage Scuba Collection.
The faceplate is perfect; the band clamp too is like new; the rubber skirt is amazingly soft & flexible.
I would say that this mask could be used but .... the nose pockets are dry and one is cracked. The owner was too enthusiastic about squeezing those nose clamps!
And the strap too has suffered. It's quite dry & distorted as well.
This great old mask is only for your Vintage Scuba display.
But it's a beauty!
